One thing I'm discovering in this season of life is how much more aware I've become of my emotions. Not because life suddenly became more complicated, but because I finally slowed down enough to notice what's been there all along.
For years, I was really good at pushing through or staying steady. I could keep going no matter what was happening inside. And honestly, that skill served me for a long time.
But midlife has a way of softening us.
Why do I feel so emotional in midlife?
Especially if we can learn to slow down and make more space to listen, something interesting happens: feelings that were once buried start to rise to the surface.
Sometimes it's grief. Sometimes frustration or resentment. Sometimes a quiet restlessness we can't quite explain.
And at first, that can feel unsettling. Like something must be wrong.
But I'm learning that nothing is wrong at all.
It's actually a sign that we're becoming more honest with ourselves. This is good.
What are my emotions trying to tell me?
What's been most helpful for me is seeing emotions not as obstacles, but as information. (I like to call them "messengers.")
When I feel overwhelmed, it often means I've been carrying too much for too long. When I feel sad, it's often pointing to something that mattered deeply, something that deserves to be acknowledged, not dismissed.
Our emotions don't show up randomly. They're often trying to get our attention in a gentle but persistent way. Which means we shouldn't ignore them or try to push them down.
Because when we stop overriding our feelings, we start making better choices. We live more in alignment. We respond instead of react. We become more compassionate toward ourselves and others.
Meeting God in the middle of our emotions
From a spiritual perspective, I've also found that some of my most honest moments with God happen right in the middle of these emotions. When I get really honest with myself and with God about what I'm feeling, and I meet those feelings with love and compassion.
There's something deeply freeing about that.
When the feelings are big, a simple breath prayer helps me stay present to them instead of running from them.
Midlife as a sacred invitation
Lately, I've been reflecting on how much midlife invites us into an honest pause. Not the kind that feels forced, but the kind that reorients us.
For me, this season has been less about reinventing and more about returning. Returning to the woman I've always been underneath the layers of roles, responsibilities, and the stories I've carried for years. It's like God is whispering, "You've spent a lot of time striving and performing. Now let's get back to being. Trust me."
Maybe you feel it too. Maybe you've started questioning what used to feel like truth. Maybe you're craving more space, more stillness, or just more you.
It's not too late. You're not behind. You haven't missed your chance.
You're standing in the middle of it.
What is midlife inviting us into?
In this season, we're invited to:
🌿 Release old roles and worn-out expectations
🌿 Reclaim rhythms that restore our soul
🌿 Remember the woman God created us to be, before the world told us who we should be
Midlife is a kind of spiritual pruning. And you know what pruning makes way for?
Fruit.
Deeper joy. Simpler living. Truer connection. Peace that doesn't depend on performance.
A few questions women ask me about midlife
Is it normal to feel more emotional in midlife? Yes. Many women notice feelings rising closer to the surface in midlife, especially once they slow down. It doesn't mean you're too sensitive or losing control. It often means you're finally making space to listen. (If your emotions feel overwhelming or won't lift, please talk with your doctor or a counselor too.)
What does it mean that midlife is a "spiritual awakening"? For me, it's been less about reinventing and more about returning: to the woman underneath the roles, and to a slower, more honest relationship with God.
How do I start listening to my emotions? Slow down long enough to notice them. Name what you feel, ask what it might be pointing to, and bring it honestly to God with compassion instead of judgment.
You're right on time
So if you've noticed your emotions feeling a little closer to the surface lately, you're not alone. It doesn't mean you're too sensitive. It doesn't mean you're losing control. And it definitely doesn't mean you're doing something wrong.
It may simply mean you're becoming more awake to your own life.
If you're sensing that something is shifting within you, please honor that. If you feel the pull to slow down, simplify, or breathe a little deeper, listen to it. That tug might just be the Holy Spirit inviting you into your next, truest chapter.
And you're not too late. You're right on time. 💛
